Charleston, S.C - Western Carolina women's soccer, behind a season-high six goals, defeated The Citadel Bulldogs, 6-0, on Friday afternoon. Five different players contributed with goals in the match, with assists going to four different players.

The Catamounts improve to 4-5 and 1-0 in the Southern Conference after the win, while the Citadel drops to 2-5-1 and 0-1 in the SoCon. The win was also the 100th all-time for the WCU women's soccer program, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary Oct. 3-5 around Homecoming 2008.

The scoring flurry started early in the match, when at just two minutes in junior midfielder Shanna Schmoker beat the Bulldogs keeper Whitney Nave to give the Catamounts an early 1-0 lead. It was Schmoker's first goal of the season, thanks to the assist from senior teamate Buki Baruwa.

Six minutes later the Catamounts were attacking again, when Buruwa scored pushing Western Carolina's lead to 2-0. Baruwa beat the Bulldogs keeper Nave after an assist from teammate freshman Kayla Beauduy, giving Baruwa her first goal of the year.

At the 25 minute mark of the first half, Schmoker added her second goal of the match beating Bulldogs keeper Nave for the goal, to make it 3-0 Western. Schmoker finished the contest with two goals on three shots.

Eight minutes later the club found the net again, this time junior Jenny Matteson scored her first goal of the season thanks to an assist from teammate Beauduy to give the Catamounts a 4-0 lead.

Western Carolina wasn't done, scoring a mere eighteen seconds later on a Bri Cunningham blast making the score 5-0 Catamounts. Cunningham scored for the first time this season with teammate Hilary Holder on the assist.

The first half ended with Western Carolina ending the half with a 12-to-1 shot advantage to finish the half.

Western Carolina added another goal late in the match thanks to junior Kelly Estes, who scored her first goal on the season. Estes found the net beating Bulldogs keeper Emily Green on an assist from teammate Taylor Lee giving the Catamounts the 6-0 win.

The Catamounts victory set season-highs in shots (20), and goals scored (6) on the season.

Western Carolina will travel just down the road to take on the College of Charleston Cougars Sunday Sept. 28 starting at 2 p.m.
