Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina University's Athletic Department had 20 student-athletes named to the TIAA-CREF Spring Academic All-Conference team announced this week by the Southern Conference office.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the spring season.
The Catamount's 20 selections were highlighted by a combined 12 from the men and women's track & field teams, eight of which came from the women's side. Ten of the honorees were listed on the winter academic team for the indoor season, and four have qualified for the NCAA East Regional this weekend in Randalls Island, NY.
The men's track & field team was second with four selections, followed by a trio of women's golfers, two from both men's golf and baseball, and one from the women's tennis squad.
This is the third year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. A total of 229 student-athletes representing the 12 conference schools made the list with an overall average grade point average (GPA) of 3.54 during the spring.
