Men's Golf Heads to Georgia for Pinetree Intercollegiate

Cullowhee, N.C. – The Western Carolina men's golf team travels to Kennesaw, Ga.., for the penultimate event of the fall portion of its 2019-20 schedule playing in the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by former WCU head coach Bryant Odom his Kennesaw State Owls at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club.

The two-day, 54-hole event is slated for 36 holes of continuous play on Monday, Oct. 21 followed by the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Live scoring for the tournament is available online at GolfStat.com with links also available on CatamountSports.com.

In addition to the host Owls and the Catamounts, the 11-team field includes Austin Peay, Belmont, Jacksonville State, Loyola Chicago, Mercer, Tennessee Tech, Toledo, Troy, and Western Kentucky. Kennesaw State is the only previous winning school in this year's field as the Owls claimed the first three events between 2012 and 2014 as a part of four team championships overall, also winning in 2016.

This year marks just the second time in the eight-year history of the Pinetree Intercollegiate that WCU has participated, finishing 10th out of 11 teams back in 2014 despite a seventh-place tie individually by former Catamount J.T. Poston (74-71-72 = 217, +1).

Western Carolina will have six golfers in the individual field with junior Michael Coe playing unattached to the scoring five to vie for the individual championship. A trio of newcomers will lead the WCU side including freshman Pierre Viallaneix in the No. 1 spot, followed by redshirt freshman transfer Tyler Bussert and true freshman Magnus Pedersen in the second and third positions. Viallaneix ranks among the top 10 golfers in the Southern Conference in scoring average this season with a team-best stroke average of 71.89.

Sophomore Louis Theys qualified in fourth, making just his second appearance in a tournament this season – first among WCU's scoring five. Rounding out WCU's scorers is junior Zach Caudill who is likewise making his first start inside the scoring side.

Full recaps of each day of competition including results will be made available on Monday and Tuesday online at CatamountSports.com with updates through social media on Twitter using the handles @catamounts and @GolfWcu.
