Western Carolina Fell to Nationally Ranked Furman by One

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's soccer team fell to the 19th nationally ranked Furman 1-2.

Freshman Kristen Deon scored her first collegiate goal as a Lady Catamount at the 74:17 mark off a pass from teammate Jordan Howell. Howell recorded her second assist on the season.

Furman started the game with a goal by senior Sarah Tollick at 27:41 to five the Lady Paladins the 1-0 lead. The goal was followed freshman Emily Turgeon off a free kick by Tollick.

Despite two goals sophomore Mandi Tinsley recorded ten saves on 19 shots by Furman. Western recorded six shots on the day with sophomore Nardia Moore and Deon leading the way with two each.

"Our last five games have been impressive with one goal loses to the top four teams in the conference," stated Head Coach Debbie Hensley. "However, it also hurts to be that close to a major upset and not get it."

Western will have break from Southern Conference play Tuesday, October 3rd when they host High Point at 4 p.m. The team will then travel to Appalachian State Friday, October 6th at 7:30 p.m.

WCU falls to a 5-6-1overall record and 0-4 in league play while Furman improves to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the league.
