SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Jesse McCoy rushed for 114 yards and scored two
touchdowns to lead Wofford to a 40-31 victory against Western Carolina
Saturday.
McCoy put Wofford on the scoreboard with a 73-yard TD pass from Travis
Wilson on the Terriers' (4-2, 3-1 Southern Conference) first play from
scrimmage in the first quarter.
He carried 33 yards to the Western Carolina 3-yard line to set up a Tony
Hudson scoring run on the next snap to give Wofford a 14-6 lead with 11:53 left
in the second quarter.
The Catamounts (2-5, 1-4) tied the game at 14-14 when David Rivers connected
a 6-yard TD pass with Brian Rucker. But Wofford's Darren Brown kicked field
goals of 44 and 30 yards to put the Terriers up 20-14 at the half.
Wilson, who was 11-of-14 for 224 yards while adding 95 yards rushing on 15
carries, also scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter.
He connected a 14-yard TD pass with McCoy in the fourth quarter to give
Wofford a 40-17 lead.
Western Carolina cut the Terriers when Rivers connected TD passes of 54 and
16 yards with Michael Banks and Caesar Campana for the final margin.
Western Carolina quarterback David Rivers set single-game school records
for passing yards (474) and total offense (495) while tying the mark for
single-game completions by hitting on 31-of-44 attempts. Lamont
Steward's 12 receptions (174 yards) ranks as the second-most single-game
catches in school history.
