Women's Soccer will Compete in Conference Tournament
Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team defeated College of Charleston Sunday afternoon (3-2) and Georgia Southern (2-1) in overtime, Friday afternoon to be assured of a spot in the Southern Conference Tournament for the 2000 season.
Sophomore Kelly Barker scored her seventh goal of the season to clinch WCU's victory over College of Charleston at the 80:10 mark. Morgan Foresman received the throw in from teammate Brandy Ossmann and passed it along to Barker who hit the upper corner of the goal.
Freshman Jordan Howell started the scoring for the Cats with her 12th goal of the season at 34:42. Howell took control of the ball just inside the Cougar territory as she broke away from the defenders and past goalkeeper Alice Keeney. Freshman Kristen Deon marked her third goal of the season with a short chip from the right side, Barker and Ossmann assisted on the play.
Just 1:18 later College of Charleston answered back with the team's first goal by Alison Davies with the assist from Candace Vogt at 62:57. At the 82:40 mark, just 2:30 after WCU's game winning goal by Barker, the Cougars scored for the second time. Sophomore Laurie Herbert took a free kick that inched past the fingers of WCU keeper Mandi Tinsley at the top of the goal.
WCU was led by Nardia Moore, Howell and Barker, who took three shots each. Charleston was led by Davies and freshman Stephanie Tilton, also with three shots.
Western Carolina improves to a 10-7-2 overall record and 4-4-1 in conference play while College of Charleston falls to 4-11-2 and 3-4-1 in the league. WCU is one of the eight teams in the conference competing in the Southern Conference Tournament, which will be November 3-5 in Charleston, S.C.
