LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - David Rivers passed for 394 yards and three touchdowns as Western Carolina beat Virginia Military Institute 41-31 Saturday.

Rivers' was 29-for-46 with no interceptions, and connected with Lamont Seward for a 50 yard TD with 4:14 left in the game. Seward ended the game with 10 catches for 171 yards.

Rivers also threw two scoring passes to Michael Banks.

Gene Cauthen rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown for VMI (1-8, 0-6). He also caught the last TD pass of the game, a 16-yarder from Joey Gibson with 2:31 left to play.

Western Carolina (4-5, 3-4 Southern) traded leads with the Keydets until the end of the third quarter, when Fred Boateng had a 4-yard run to put Western Carolina on top 27-24.
