NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - St. Joseph's jumped to a 16-0 lead on its way to a
103-53 win over Western Carolina on Friday in the inaugural America's Youth
Classic at Vanderbilt University.
Marvin O'Connor led all scorers with 23 points and Erick Woods had 16 for
the Hawks. Bill Phillips added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The loss spoiled the debut of Catamounts coach Steve Shurina, an assistant
the last 10 years.
Cory Largent had 17 points to lead the Catamounts. Willie Freeman had nine
points and nine rebounds.
St. Joe's freshman guard Jameer Nelson started and scored 11 points. Two
other freshmen, Jeff Miller and Tyrone Barley, saw action.
St. Joe's made 18-of-27 shots in the first half, while the Catamounts hit
just 6-of-26. The 103 points is the most for the Hawks since a 116-67 win over
Wheeling Jesuit in November 1991.
The meeting was the first between the two schools.
In Saturday action in the round-robin event, Vanderbilt will play Western
Carolina and South Carolina State will play St. Joseph's. Vandy defeated South
Carolina State 65-60 in the first game Friday.
