NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - St. Joseph's jumped to a 16-0 lead on its way to a 103-53 win over Western Carolina on Friday in the inaugural America's Youth Classic at Vanderbilt University.

Marvin O'Connor led all scorers with 23 points and Erick Woods had 16 for the Hawks. Bill Phillips added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The loss spoiled the debut of Catamounts coach Steve Shurina, an assistant the last 10 years.

Cory Largent had 17 points to lead the Catamounts. Willie Freeman had nine points and nine rebounds.

St. Joe's freshman guard Jameer Nelson started and scored 11 points. Two other freshmen, Jeff Miller and Tyrone Barley, saw action.

St. Joe's made 18-of-27 shots in the first half, while the Catamounts hit just 6-of-26. The 103 points is the most for the Hawks since a 116-67 win over Wheeling Jesuit in November 1991.

The meeting was the first between the two schools.

In Saturday action in the round-robin event, Vanderbilt will play Western Carolina and South Carolina State will play St. Joseph's. Vandy defeated South Carolina State 65-60 in the first game Friday.
