Conway, S.C. - Western Carolina University, led by five players scoring in double figures, defeated Coastal Carolina University 69-51 in women's basketball action Saturday night in Kimbel Arena.
Coastal Carolina (2-1) scored the first four points of the game and held onto the lead until Laura Echols' jumper for WCU tied the game at 6-6 with 15:24 remaining in the first half. That was the last time the Lady Chanticleers would be so close as the Catamounts (2-1) continuously connected on big shots to keep the lead. Ahead 18-16 with 8:25 on the clock, WCU closed the half with an 18-7 run to open a 36-23 lead at the break.
The run proved to be decisive as Western built as much as a 27-point advantage before closing to the final 18-point gap.
April Fleck led the Catamounts with 15 points, while Echols (14), Tiffany Hamm (12), Marsha McGillivary (11) and Janetta Heggins (10) joined her in double figures. Heggins also posted eight rebounds to lead Western to a 41-31 advantage on the glass. Christy Blackwell also hit double digits as she tallied 10 assists.
Brooke Weisbrod, who connected on just 4-of-17 from the field, Jed Coastal with 13 points. Freshman post player Crystal Brown posted 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Chanticleers connected on just 28.6 percent from the field, while Western connected on 56.4 percent from the field.
