Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Lady Catamount basketball team battled through a sluggish start against the Campbell Camels, but fell 83-74 in non-conference action Monday night in the Ramsey Center.
WCU (2-2) put four players into double-figure scoring, led by junior Laura Echols with 22 points, eight rebounds on 10-of-20 shooting. The Conyers, Georgia native also had three steals on the interior.
Senior April Fleck, who was honored in pre-game for joining the WCU 1,000 point club, added 12 points, five steals, and a pair of assists. Marsha McGillivary and Janetta Heggins both tallied 11 points for the Lady Cats.
The Lady Cats were held scoreless the first four minutes of the contest, trailing 7-0 early on. However, they rallied to tie the game at 17 midway through the first half. Campbell proceeded to take a commanding 10-point lead, which WCU chiseled away at, trailing by one at the break, 37-36.
In the second, the Lady Cats took the lead by three early on, but the combination of cold shooting from the field and a red-hot Camel team helped CU build a 16-point advantage at the 12-minute mark.
Yet, head coach Beth Dunkenberger's squad never gave up. Using tough defense and ball pressure, combined with the interior play of Echols, the Lady Cats fought right down to the end.
Senior Sara Moore and April Cromartie, both finishing with 20 points, led Campbell. Cromartie had the double-double, adding 12 boards. Two other Camels finished with double-figure scoring, with Crystal Clary tallying 15 and point-guard Janice Washington finishing with 12.
Western Carolina will go on the road for a while, where this season they are a perfect 2-0. They will travel to Tennessee State on Wednesday, November 29 and make an appearance in a Beach Blast tournament held on the campus of UNC Wilmington this coming weekend.
