Nasheville, Tenn. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team took a 67-59 victory home over Tennessee State Wednesday night in the Gentry Center.
Despite the fact that Western Carolina trailed for the majority of the first half a short run brought the team back from a seven point deficit with 12:36 on the clock. A jumper by WCU's Katie Scott started the comeback and allowed Western to take the lead with 3:10 remaining in the first half. Tennessee State's Odessa Kelly stole the lead with a layup at 1:36, however, free throws by WCU's Christy Blackwell put Western back on top. The teams entered the half with Western down by only five (28-33).
A series of three layups by the Lady Cats put WCU back in the game and down by only one. Junior Laura Echols made a layup with 1:39 remaining in the game to give Western the one point lead. The Lady Cats widened the gap in the remaining minutes and put the game out of reach for Tennessee State.
Blackwell and freshman Tiffany Hamm led the team with 11 points, while Echols added 10 and nine rebounds. WCU outrebounded the Lady Tigers 48-33.
