Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's basketball team fell to VASDA 70-74 in its first exhibition game of the 2000-01 season Tuesday night in the Ramsey Center.
WCU junior Cory Largent landed a 3-pointer two minutes into the second half to give the Catamounts the first lead of the half. It was followed up by another shot from behind the arch by sophomore Kori Hatcher. WCU rallied for the next four minutes of play to take a seven-point advantage and the team's largest margin of the game.
VASDA led 32-31 at the half despite a Catamount comeback in the last few minutes of play. WCU fought back to a 30-30 tie with 43 seconds remaining in the first half with two free throws by Largent. WCU took a one-point lead when junior Willie Freeman hit his free throw shortly after the tie.
Three Catamounts recorded double-figures, Freeman with 19, Largent with 16 and senior Todd Seibert recorded 14. Junior guard, Casey Rogers dished out six assists and marked seven steals on the night.
VASDA was led by Derrick Stroud with 21 points, Derrall Dumas with 16 and Ajamu Gaines with 11. Stroud also recorded a double double with 10 rebounds.
