Wilmington, N.C. - The Western Carolina (4-3) women's basketball team fell in the final minutes to UNC Wilmington (4-1) in the championship game of the Beach Blast Tournament Sunday afternoon.
UNC Wilmington outscored Western 37-29 in the second half. Western led for most of the game including halftime (39-38).
WCU's April Fleck made a layup with 15:01 in the second half to give her team a nine point lead, it was the biggest of the day. UNCW sneaked up on WCU and took the lead at the 2:36 mark.
Junior Laura Echols led WCU for the tournament. She scored 27 points against UNCW for a total of 50 for the tournament. Echols was named to the Beach Blast all-tournament team. She was joined by Fleck, who marked 16 points against UNCW. Also scoring in double figures was freshman Tiffany Hamm with 12, while sophomore Christy Blackwell led with seven assists.
