Box Score

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Kelly Barker led the women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville Thursday night at Charles W. Schrader Field.

UNC Asheville's Kelsey Dawson started the scoring in the second half at 77:09 when her shot from 15 feet out made its way past WCU keeper Mandi Tinsley. Barker answered with her fourth goal of the season with a header over UNCA keeper Caroline Jacobsen off a free kick by sophomore Nardia Moore at 82:39. Less than three minutes later a corner kick by freshman Lauren Bramlett found its way to Barker, who again headed the ball past Jacobsen at 85:22 to clinch the game winning goal and the fifth win of the season for Western Carolina.

At half time, the two teams were not only even on the scoreboard but in several other categories as well. It was a slow half with only five shots and two corner kicks by each team as well as three saves for Jacobsen and four for Tinsley.

In the end Western outshot Asheville 20-7 with Tinsley recording five saves and Jacobsen with eight. Both teams evened out in fouls with 13. Two Lady Cats led the team with five shots, Barker and Moore with freshmen Jordan Howell and Felicia Wilson each adding four.

Western Carolina improves to a 5-1-1 record while the Bulldogs fall to a 1-3-1. The Lady Cats will next travel to nationally ranked Clemson Sunday, September 17 for a 2:00 p.m. start.
