Western Carolina fell to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Conference when they fell to the Wofford Lady Terrier squad, 71-61, Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C.
Wofford (6-6, 2-2) shot 57.4 percent from the floor, while Western Carolina was held to 32.8 percent shooting by a stingy Lady Terrier defense.
Indeed, the Lady Catamounts got 22 points from their starting center. Echols scored the last 14 points of the first half to help Western to a 26-25 lead at halftime.
Wofford came out in the second half with a lot of emotion. After shooting just 45 percent from the floor in the first half, the Lady Terriers sank 66.7 percent of their shots in the second stanza as Wofford grabbed a an eight-point lead, 46-38, with 11:16 to play in the game.
The lead increased to 11 points, 59-48, with 5:15 to play and grew to as many as 14 in the final four minutes as Wofford put away the victory.
Lucy Hines finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and four blocks to lead Wofford. She has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games. Jenny Nett had a solid all-around game with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Natalie Walsh was solid at the point for Wofford, finishing with eight points, five rebounds, and six assists.
Echols was the only Western player to finish in double figures. She also pulled down five rebounds. Janetta Heggins had eight points and three assists, while Tiffany Hamm added seven points, five rebounds, and two assists for the Lady Catamounts.
Western Carolina returns to action at home Monday night against Chattanooga in a 7:00 p.m. start.
