Women Drop Heartbreaker to Chattanooga

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina (7-6, 1-4) women's basketball team fell 57-69 to Southern Conference opponent Chattanooga (11-3, 5-0) Monday night in the Ramsey Center.

The Lady Catamounts jumped out to a 6-0 lead against the Lady Mocs in the first few minutes of the game. The Mocs fought their way back to take the lead 9-8 at the 16:16 mark. A pair of free throws by WCU's Janetta Heggins and a three-pointer by Tiffany Hamm put the Cats back in the lead 12-9 at the 14:04 mark. WCU continued to dominate UTC forcing 12 turnovers in the first half while only committing three.

After leading by a score of 34-25 WCU held the lead until the 11:52 mark when UTC's Nneka Irons landed a layup to make the score 41-40. Heggins again came through for the Cats with a layup to bring WCU within four, 50-54. UTC went on a 15-7 run to win the game.

Hamm led Western Carolina with 14 points and Echols with 11. Christy Blackwell led the team in steals with four adding to a team total of 11.

Chattanooga was led by Jennifer Wilson with the games only double double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Also recording double figures was Damita Bullock with 12.

Western Carolina will host Georgia State Thursday, January 11. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
