Final Stats

Cullowhee, N.C. - Sophomore Jordan Howell scored the lone goal in the contest to lead Western Carolina women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon at Schrader Field.

The win, combined with a Furman victory over Georgia Southern earlier in the day, makes the Catamounts the top seed at the 2001 Southern Conference Championship, held Nov. 8-10 in Greenville, S.C., at Furman University. Western, who is only in its third year of having varsity women's soccer, has also locked up at least a share of the SoCon regular-season title, with several teams having league games left on their schedule.

Howell (Southern Pines, N.C.) recorded her team-leading 13th goal of the season from 15 yards at the 17:43 mark. The break-away goal was setup by Nardia Moore (Fountain Inn, S.C.), who now leads the team with eight assists. Catamount goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley (High Point, N.C.) notched her sixth shutout of the season with seven saves on ASU's 10 shots.

"I am so proud of what this team has accomplished so far," said WCU head coach Debbie Hensley. "Finishing the conference regular season as the top seed was a goal we set the first day of practice. It feels great to make that goal a reality. In addition to our team's play, I am very appreciative of our fan support this season."

Appalachian State was led by Alana Parrett, who had two shots. Keeper Breland Meany recorded seven saves, five in the second half, on WCU's 20 shots.

Western finished the season 10-0 at home and 8-2 in the SoCon. The Catamounts are 14-4 overall, with its final regular-season match coming Nov. 3 at Georgia State (2 pm). Appalachian State (9-7-3, 6-3-1 SoCon) wrapped up its regular season today and will not return to action until league championship.

The Catamounts will face the eighth seed at the SoCon Championship on Thursday (Nov. 8) at 7:30 p.m.
