Senior Laura Echols recorded a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Western Carolina to a 77-74 victory over the University of Central Florida women's basketball team in the second round of the UCF Golden Knights Classic at UCF Arena on Saturday afternoon.
UCF (1-1) led by as much as 12 points (44-32) just under three minutes into the second half but WCU (2-0) chipped away at the Golden Knights advantage. With 2:32 left in the game and the score tied at 68, Ki-Ki Glass hit a 3-pointer - her only points in the contest - and WCU would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the game.
The Golden Knights led by a score of 36-29 at the half thanks in part to a 10-point effort by Marvelous Washington, who finished the game with 14.
The two teams were evenly matched as WCU shot 48.3 percent from the field, compared to UCF's 47.1 percent. Turnovers favored the Catamounts by a 15-16 margin while rebounds favored the Golden Knights at 36-34.
Echols was joined in double figures by Tiffany Hamm (16 points) and Yoneko Allen (15 points). Allen also added five assists and did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes of play.
Western Carolina will return to action on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., when it travels to Chapel Hill to face the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Catamounts open their home schedule on Nov. 29 (Thursday) with a tilt versus Wake Forest. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., at the Ramsey Activity Center (RAC).
