Laura Echols recorded her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Western Carolina to a 56-55 victory over Campbell University on Saturday at Carter Gym.
Campbell had a chance to take the lead in the final seconds, but Carrie Emory's 17-foot jump shot rimmed out and Western gained control on alternating possession for a held ball.
Catamount sophomore Tiffany Hamm added 16 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range, and seven rebounds for Western (3-1). Yoneko Allen also reached double figures with 10 points, while Ki-Ki Glass just missed a double-double with eight points and nine assists.
Stacey Hinkle led Campbell (1-2) with 14 points, while Emory contributed 13 points and Crystal Clary provided a spark off the bench with 10 points.
Western led 30-29 at the half, thanks to its six 3-pointers. The Catamounts hit 7-of-15 (.467) from long range on the game, while Campbell did not even attempt a trey in the first half and was 3-of-9 in the second.
Western Carolina will return to action on Thursday (Nov. 29) when it hosts Wake Forest at 7 pm in the Ramsey Activity Center. The Catamounts will also host UNC Asheville as part of a doubleheader with the men on Saturday (Dec. 1). Tip-off for the women's game at the RAC is 1:00 pm, with the men set to begin at 3:30 pm. Western will end its three-game homestand on Tuesday (Dec. 4) when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 7 pm.
