WCU Basketball Sets Records With 133-58 Victory over Toccoa Falls

Cullowhee, N.C. - Eight Catamounts scored in double figures as Western Carolina set single-game school records in points and margin of victory with a 133-58 decision over Toccoa Falls Monday night at the Ramsey Activity Center.

The previous WCU record for points in a game was 132 set in January of 1971 versus Piedmont, while the previous largest margin of victory was 70 in a 123-53 victory over Piedmont the following December. Western additionally tied a school record by making 61 field goals, which was accomplished versus Piedmont in January of 1971. Tonight's game also marked Western's 98th time to reach triple digits and the first time since a 120-76 victory over Limestone in December of 1996.

As he has in each of the first two games, Catamount freshman Kevin Martin (Zanesville, Ohio) led WCU (2-1) with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while adding four assists, four steals and zero turnovers. Juniors Kori Hatcher (Valdosta, Ga.) and Lamont Speaks (Clinton, S.C.) registered their first career double-doubles. Hatcher, a three-year Catamount veteran, scored 11 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists. Speaks, a junior-college transfer who started at center, scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in his first action at WCU.

Other Catamounts to reach double figures in scoring included Terrence Woodyard (17), Cory Largent (14), Kelvin Wylie (14), Willie Freeman (12) and Rans Brempong (12). Senior Casey Rogers also had an impressive game with nine assists and only one turnover.

Toccoa Falls (1-5) jumped out to an early 8-3 lead on a pair of 3-pointers and a short jumper by Derick Washington, who led all scorers with 20 points. Western answered with a 13-2 run and never looked back, taking a 65-23 lead at halftime.

Overall, Western made 61 field goals on 30 assists and shot 63.5 percent from the field, while Toccoa Falls only attempted 61 shots and only shot 36.1 percent. WCU also dominated the boards, with 55 rebounds to the Eagles' 26.

The Catamounts will return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 28) when it hosts Emmanuel at 7 p.m., in the Ramsey Activity Center. Western will end its current three-game homestand with a Saturday (Dec. 1) men's and women's doubleheader with region rival UNC Asheville. The women's game with the Bulldogs is set for 1:00 p.m., in the RAC, while the men's game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
