Women's Soccer Wins First Round Game

GREENVILLE, SC - Top-seeded Western Carolina scored twice in the first half and held off the Wofford offensive in the second to edge the Lady Terriers 2-1 in the second game of the 2001 Southern Conference Women' Soccer Championships at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium on the Furman University campus.

Junior midfielder Nardia Moore put Western Carolina up 1-0 at the 22:39 mark. Moore notched her seventh goal of the season in traffic off a cross from sophomore midfielder Jordan Howell. For Howell, it was her eighth assist on the season.

The Lady Catamounts took a 2-0 advantage with 30 seconds left in the first half when Howell recorded her third point of the night, scoring on a Lauren Bramlett pass through the defense and beat Wofford goalkeeper Katie Menegaz low. The goal was Howell's 14th on the year.

Wofford turned up the offensive pressure in the second stanza, tallying all four of its shots in the second period. Midway through the second half, the Lady Terriers capitalized on the increased pressure, pulling to within one when sophomore forward Jaime Cutts scored at the 58:17 mark.

WCU's Mandi Tinsley earned the win allowing one goal and recording one save. Wofford's Menegaz recorded nine saves in the loss. The Lady Cats outshot the Lady Terriers 22-4 for the game, 14-0 in the first half.

Western Carolina advances to play the winner of the Georgia Southern/Appalachian State match Saturday afternoon in match five of the tournament at 11:00 am at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium in Greenville.
