Final Stats

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Martin scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the final 4:19 to lead a 26-9 finish Saturday that carried Western Carolina to a 79-69 upset win at Florida State.

It was the first Western Carolina victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference team in 21 seasons and just its second in 36 tries. The win also ended an 18-game road losing streak.

"We were due," said Western Carolina's Willie Freeman, who chipped in with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds that helped the Catamounts to a 43-40 advantage against the Seminoles. "It proved we can win on the road and beat an ACC team."

Martin had 10 rebounds while Cory Largent added 13 points and Kori Hatcher a dozen for the Catamounts (4-3), who have their other victories this year over Emmanuel, Toccoa Falls and Tennessee Wesleyan.

A dunk by Florida State's Monte Cummings with 7:55 left gave the Seminoles (3-3) a 60-53 lead, but their frigid shooting caught up with them.

A pair of free throws by Kelvin Wylie gave West Carolina the lead for good at 66-65 with 1:50 left in the game.

The Catamounts shot 45.5 percent for the game and hit 9 of 17 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

Florida State, which was shooting just 42.8 percent going into the game, made just 36 percent of its shots, and only 23.3 percent from 3-point range.

Delvon Arrington led the Seminoles with 12 points and Trevor Harvey added 10 off the bench. Arrington, however, was only 5 of 14 from the floor and 2 of 9 from 3-point range.

Western Carolina will have one final game before taking a break for exams, hosting Guilford on Dec. 11 (Tuesday). The Cats and Quakers are set to start at 7 p.m., in the RAC.
