WCU's Cory Largent Scores a Career-High 30 Points in 90-76 loss to Wofford

Feb. 19, 2001

Box Score

Cullowhee, N.C. - Junior Cory Largent scored a career-high 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor, but it was not enough as Wofford out-scored the Catamounts 49-30 in the second half to defeat Western Carolina, 90-76, Monday night in the Ramsey Center.

The game was a tale to two halves. Largent pumped in 17 first-half points to lead the Catamounts to a 46-41 halftime advantage, while the Southern Conference's leading scorer, Wofford's Ian Chadwick, was held to only two points on 1-of-5 shooting. However, Chadwick, who entered the game with a 19.8 scoring average, scored 19 second-half points en route to a 21-point performance.

The Terriers (12-14, 7-8 SoCon) were led by sophomore guard Mike Lenzly, who scored a career-high 28 on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor (5-of-7 from 3-point range) with eight rebounds.

Despite shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half, Western Carolina only led by as many as six (three times) as Lenzly matched Largent's first-half effort with 17 points, making 6-of-7 shots overall and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Lee Nixon, who scored 22 on the night, also played a key role in keeping the Terriers close with 12 first-half points.

The Catamounts came out with a 9-4 flurry over the first five minutes of the second half and take a 10-point lead, 55-45. WCU also held a 10-point lead, 57-47, at the 13:49 mark. Wofford would go on a 29-9 run over the next eight minutes, which included a four minute dry spell for Western Carolina, to build a 10-point lead of its own. During the span, Lenzly scored nine points and Chadwick had eight. Chadwick also made a 3-pointer and all six of his free throw attempts inside the final five minutes to preserve the win.

Largent's 30 point performance marked the first time since December of 1999 that a Catamount had scored 30 or more in a game. The last time that feat was accomplished was by Casey Rogers against Columbia when he tallied 31.

WCU managed one other player in double-figures as sophomore guard Kori Hatcher added in 13. Forward Willie Freeman posted a game-high 12 rebounds, nine of which were defensive.

As a team, the Catamounts shot 50 percent from the floor (29-of-58), including 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from behind the 3-point arc. However, Wofford nailed 11 three-point baskets out of their 26 attempts (42 percent) which was the difference in the second stanza.

Western Carolina (4-24, 2-13 SoCon) concludes its 2000-01 regular season on Saturday (Feb. 24) when it hosts UNC Greensboro. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., in the Ramsey Center.
