Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team crushed the College of Charleston Monday night in the Ramsey Center 87-61. It was the second consecutive game that the Lady Cats won by a margin of 26 points or more.
WCU jumped out to a 10-point (12-2) lead by the 13:59 mark. For the next five minutes of play the Cats scored 11 of 15 points from the bonus line. A layup by junior Katie Scott gave the Cats a 20-point lead with 3:24 in the first half. WCU held on to a 13-point lead to enter halftime (39-26).
College of Charleston threatened a comeback in the first few minutes of the second half cutting the lead to nine at the 16:31 mark. Over the next three minutes WCU extended the lead to 16 (55-39) with a jumper by freshman Tiffany Hamm. A pair of free throws by the Cougar's Wilma Simpson again put her team within nine with 8:10 remaining in the game.
The Lady Cats went ahead 87-61 by a pair of free throws by Janetta Heggins with 25 seconds remaining. Charleston's Jennifer Manard missed her free throws in the remaining seconds to finish the game with an 87-61 final.
Hamm and junior Laura Echols led the team in scoring with 18. Joining the pair in double figures was Heggins with 14, senior April Fleck with 13 and sophomore Christy Blackwell with 11. It was the second consecutive game that WCU had five players in double figures.
Charleston was led by Simpson with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She recorded the only double-double of the game.
WCU finishes out the season Saturday, February 24 when they host arch-rival Appalachian State at 4:00 p.m. The game will be followed by the men who will take on UNC Greensboro at 7:00 p.m.
