Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Lady Catamounts put four players into double-figures and shot 53 percent from the field for the game en route to a 91-60 win over the Davidson College Wildcats Saturday afternoon.
The win was WCU's first this season in the Ramsey Center and improved their record to 9-12 overall, 3-9 in the Southern Conference. Davidson fell to 8-13 on the season, 3-9 in league play.
Sophomore Marsha McGillivary led the Lady Cat offensive attack, scoring a career-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Junior Laura Echols and freshman Tiffany Hamm both reached double-digits in the paint for WCU, finishing with 17 and 18 points, respectively. Echols also finished with a double double pulling down 10 boards.
Freshman Janetta Heggins also reached double figures, scoring 13 in the win.
Senior April Fleck scored eight points, pulled down nine boards, and made three steals in the win. The three steals put Fleck into second on the WCU career steals list surpassing Judy Green. Fleck currently has 221 career steals.
The Lady Cats came out of the blocks hot, racing out to a 25-4 lead midway through the first half. They would push their advantage to as many as 23 with 7:53 remaining in the half, but the Wildcats rallied finishing on an 11-2 run to trail by nine, 40-31 at the break.
WCU never let up in the second half, building their nine-point halftime advantage to 18 at the 16:46 mark. The Lady Cats lead was never below 20 points from the 11:18 mark and not below 30 the final minute and a half.
Western Carolina managed to out-rebound Davidson, 51-37, and held the Wildcats to 31 percent shooting for the game.
Davidson had three players in double figures led Janna Magette with 17 points and seven rebounds. The other two Wildcats to reach the double figure plateau were Kim Taylor and JoAnne Hassel, both finishing with ten points apiece. Hassel also recorded four steals.
The Lady Cats will look to make it two wins in a row at home as they host Wofford College Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
