Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team finished the regular season on a high note. The Lady Cats will enter the Southern Conference Tournament with a three game winning streak after defeating Appalachian State Saturday afternoon 80-74.
Seniors April Fleck and Kris Kent played thier final game in the Ramsey Center. Fleck recorded six steals in the game to set the school record for career steals. She has a career total of 240.
Junior Laura Echols led the way in scoring with 28. She was joined by three others in double figures, freshmen Janetta Heggins and Tiffany Hamm with 14 and 12 respectively. Fleck also recorded double figures with 11 points.
A pair of free throws by Echols gave Western the 30-28 lead for the final time with 3:57 remaining in the game. The two teams entered the half with WCU over Appalachian State 37-31.
The Mountaineers threatened a comeback with 11:16 remaining in the game when they brought the it within one (51-50). WCU paced the Mountaineers for the remainder of the game, both team scored 43 points in the second half.
ASU had four in double figures, Natasha Lettsome with 18, Laura Edwards with 20, Ashleigh Fuller with 11 and Aisha Bryant with 10. Appalachian falls to 5-22 overall and 3-15 in the SoCon.
The Lady Cats finish the regular season with a 13-14 overall record and 7-11 in league play.
In their last game in the Ramsey Center two seniors, April Fleck and Kris Kent were honored.
April Fleck
April has played in 107 games in her career at Western Carolina and has started in 89. She is averaging 11.8 points per game in her career, good enough for the school's top ten. She reached the 1,000 point plateau with her 15 point performance against Coastal Carolina. April marked a career-high 24 points twice while at WCU. She now has a career total of 1,264 points and has moved up to sixth in the WCU record books. April is five steals from breaking the school career record and is fifth in career assists and third in career 3-pointers made. April was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year as well as to the Beach Blast all-tournament team.
Kris Kent
Kris has played in 104 games in her four years at WCU. She has totaled a career of 452 points and 336 rebounds. Last season Kris scored a career-high 21 points at Greensboro and a career-high five steals at College of Charleston. Kris has shot 40.0 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from the free throw line in her career.
