Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina put four players in double figures and created 15 steals on the defensive end to notch their second-straight home Southern Conference win, 76-64 Tuesday night over the Wofford College Lady Terriers in the Ramsey Center.
WCU improved to 10-12 on the season, 4-9 and in a three-way tie for sixth in the Southern Conference. Wofford fell to 8-14 overall, also 4-9 in league games. The last time WCU won back-to-back conference wins was a year ago
The Lady Cats were led by the Southern Conference's leading scorer, junior Laura Echols with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. She added eight boards and a pair of steals. Coming off her career-high setting performance on Saturday versus Davidson, sophomore Marsha McGillivary added 16 points to the win, with Tiffany Hamm adding 15 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Senior April Fleck rounded out the WCU double-figure scorers with 10 points. She added eight rebounds and game-high six steals. Christy Blackwell dished out five assists and swiped five steals while scoring four points of her own.
WCU started out well in the first half, taking the lead back from Wofford at the 15:39 mark never to relinquish it again. The Lady Cats would push their first half advantage to as many as 16 on two separate occasions, carrying the 14-point, 35-21 advantage into the locker room.
Wofford was held to 28 percent shooting in the first half.
In the second stanza, the Lady Cats extended the lead to 17 (40-25) in the first two minutes. They continued on a 25-18 run in the following ten minutes to give the Cats a 27-point lead with 8:10 remaining in the game. The Lady Terriers showed signs of life in the remaining minutes of play going on a 9-1 run. However, time ran out on Wofford as WCU walked away with a 76-64 victory.
Wofford was led by freshman Natalie Walsh with 14 points and three assists. Junior Nancy Dubuisson had a double double, 11 points, and 10 boards before fouling out at the 7:15 mark.
Western Carolina goes on the road for its next two contests, both of which are against upper echelon teams in the Southern Conference. The Lady Catamounts will battle Chattanooga Saturday, February 10 at 4:00 p.m., and will travel to Georgia Southern Monday night, February 12 at 7:00 p.m.
