Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team fell to Southern Conference rival Appalachian State Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-6.
Junior Shelby Fitzpatrick and freshman Shannon Zalinski battled in doubles play against ASU's Tammy Beaulieu and Jennifer Fayad. The pair fell by a score of 6-8 and now hold a 1-4 record.
Zalinski recorded the team's only victory of the day over Elena Berger as well as the longest match of the day. She lost the first set 4-6 and had a comeback win of 7-5. Zalinski sealed the victory with a 6-4 win in the third set. Zalinski improves to a 3-2 individual record.
Junior Emmy King dropped her first set 1-6. She fought back in the second to lead 4-1, however, could not hold on and lost 4-6 to Fayad. King falls to a 2-3 record.
Fitzpatrick also went to the third set for the decision. She recorded a 6-2 win in the first, and then fell 5-7 in the second and 2-6 in the third. The loss drops Fitzpatrick to a 3-2 individual record.
Western Carolina will next travel to UNC Asheville Thursday, March 29 for a 2:00 p.m. start.
