Rightfielder Rod Goldston went 3-for-4 including the game-winning RBI to lead Western Carolina past The Citadel, 7-6, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon in Riley Park.
The Citadel (23-11, 10-4 SoCon) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning as Stuart Jordan singled and scored, while second baseman Orlando Garcia singled home shortstop David Griffin in the frame. The Bulldogs pounded out three more in the third, when catcher Jason Randall doubled home two runs and Griffin singled home Randall. The Bulldogs added another in the fifth to account for the six Citadel runs.
Western Carolina (15-17, 9-7 SoCon) posted three runs in the third inning Goldston singled and scored on a RBI double by first baseman Todd Buchanan, leftfielder Alan Beck scored on a balk and Buchanan scored on a RBI single by Ryan McCurry. The Catamounts added another in the fourth and tied the game in the seventh as they posted two runs in the frame. The inning was highlighted by a Beck double that scored Goldston and a RBI single by Donovan Minero that scored Beck. The Catamounts took the lead in the eighth as pinch hitter Michael Roane reached on an error by The Citadel and scored on a groundout by Goldston.
Right-hander Ryan Foster picked up the victory to improve to 1-2 on the season, while Randy Corn picked up the loss for the Bulldogs.
The two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 1 pm in the rubber game in Riley Park.
