Todd Buchanan's RBI single spurred a three-run ninth as Western Carolina (30-24, 18-11 SoCon) defeated VMI (15-32, 8-19 SoCon), 6-3 Sunday afternoon.
Buchanan, who was 4-for-4 on the day, drove home leadoff hitter Ryan Schade, who reached on throwing error. Alan beck also had four hits (in five at bats) for the Cats, while Donovan Minero and Doug Myers added two hits each.
WCU starter Seth Foster only allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings, but did not factor in the decision, leaving the game with the score tied at 3-3. Jared Burton, Joe Camac and Robbie Hoover each held the Keydets scoreless. Hoover (4-5) earned the win, allowing just one baserunner in 1.1 innings. Seth Foster recorded the final three outs to earn his seventh save.
With the win, WCU doubles its win total of last season (15) and has the biggest single-season turnaround success in SoCon history, improving by 14.5 games over last year. The Catamounts finish the SoCon regular seaosn tied for third and will face UNC Greensboro Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the first round of the SoCon Tournament, played May 16-19 in Charleston, S.C. (Riley Park).
