Greensboro, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team was held off, 3-1, by a pair of first-half goals from Joy Nsubuga and Wendy Kotwas of Virginia Tech, in women's college soccer action from the Adidas/Spartan Classic Sunday afternoon.

Joy Nsubuga gave Virginia Tech an early, 1-0, lead at the 9:01 mark. Emily Barnhart beat a Catamount defender on the right wing and found Nsubuga open at the six-yard box. The Hokie forward beat the diving Western Carolina goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley. Virginia Tech increased its lead just 15 minutes later. Wendy Kotwas tallied her first goal of the season at the 26:44 mark. After the Hokies missed a penalty kick, Kotwas gained possession after a Virginia Tech corner kick. Kotwas lobbed the ball into the upper right corner of the net.

After Kim Wyckoff's goal at 64:40, the Catamounts really picked up its pace. Western Carolina continually penetrated the Hokie defense, before finally picking up a goal. Jordan Howell netted her second goal of the season. The Catamounts could have narrowed the deficit to within a goal on a number of occasions. Laura Bramlett rattled the crossbar early in the second-half, but the ball bounced straight down. Hokie goalkeeper Katie Hancock grabbed the ball after it deflected off the bar.

With the score, 3-1, Western Carolina continued to apply pressure, but was unable to cut the deficit anymore.
