Asheville, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team defeated UNC Asheville (4-3) for the teams' first win of the season Thursday afternoon.
Kristin Munn defeated Stefanie Shuba, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Shelby Fitzpatrick defeated Nancy Livesay, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2. Sophomores Erin Johnson and Shannon Zalinski battled at the No. 3 and 4 position, however, could not come up with the win. Johnson won the first set 6-1 then lost the second and third sets to Emily Acker-Estes 6-2, 6-2. Zalinski fell to Sarah Cox 6-0, 6-2. Emmy King defeated Stacy Witkowski, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 position while freshman Kristin Cotton defeated Ashley West, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.
In doubles action, Fitzpatrick and Zalinski fell to Shuba and Cox in the No. 1 position with a final of 8-1. King and Munn took control of the match with an 8-5 victory over Livesay and Ashley Jones at No. 2. At the No. 3 doubles spot Cotton and Johnson fell to Acker-Estes and Witkowski, 8-4.
The Lady Cats will next compete in the Omni Southeast ITA Regional, October 27 held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
