The Western Carolina soccer team scored four goals in the second half to break open a tight game and defeat UNC Asheville, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Asheville's Greenwood Field.
Five Catamounts scored goals to improve WCU to 3-0 on the season.
The game was even for most of the first half, with the Cats taking eight shots on goal and the Bulldogs taking five. Western Carolina broke the scoreless tie with less than 10 minutes remaining in the period. Brandy Ossmann (Marshville, N.C.) scored off a long pass from Kyla Deon (Greer, S.C.) to put the Cats in front, 1-0.
Western Carolina took charge in the second half, out-shooting UNCA 14-5 in the final 45 minutes. The Catamounts broke open the game, scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half. Nardia Moore (Fountain Inn, S.C.) scored unassisted at the 53:01 mark, followed six minutes later by a goal from Felicia Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.). Western added two insurance goals in the final 10 minutes of the match, each on an assist from Lauren Bramlett (Anderson, S.C.). Christel Kirkpatrick (Waynesville, N.C.) scored her first goal of the year at the 81:58 mark. Two minutes later, Morgan Foresman (Hendersonville, N.C.) provided the final margin.
The Catamounts avoided scoring chances by UNCA (0-1) in both halves. In the first half, the Bulldogs had two corner kicks nearly reach the net. In the second half, UNCA's Sara Thorp had a ball hit the goalpost.
Western goalie Mandi Tinsley (High Point, N.C.) recorded her first shutout of the season and the seventh of her career. She had a combined shutout in WCU's previous game, as her and Tina Weaver (Hendersonville, N.C.) helped WCU defeat Charleston Southern, 3-0.
The Catamounts will return to action at the Adidas/Spartan Classic, held at UNC Greensboro this weekend. Western will face Pittsburgh on Friday (Sept. 7 at 5:00 p.m.) and Virginia Tech on Sunday (Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m.).
