WCU sophomore Yoneko Allen drained a 3-pointer with 58 seconds left in the game to lift Western Carolina to a 68-65 victory over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action at the Ramsey Activity Center.
Allen's trey gave the Catamounts a 66-65 lead. After a missed 3-pointer by Mountaineer junior Jaymi Wilson, Laura Echols knocked down a jumper with 13 seconds left to seal the win.
Western Carolina (11-5, 4-4 SoCon) erased a five-point deficit (59-54) with 6:23 left, scoring four points on one possession. Catamount sophomore Janetta Heggins made the first of two free throws. Freshman Jennifer Garner got an offensive rebound and converted an old-fashion 3-point play. Western eventually took a four-point lead (63-59) with 4:28 left after a Tiffany Hamm jumper and an Allen 3-pointer.
Appalachian State (6-11, 2-6 SoCon) battled back to regain the advantage when Lindsay Smith hit a 3-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 64-63 lead with 1:52. App State took advantage of a WCU turnover and two offensive rebounds as Ashley Fuller hit 1-of-2 at the line to give the Mountaineers a 65-63 cushion - their final lead of the game - with 1:13 left.
Echols led all scorers with 20 points. The senior added a team-high six rebounds and a game-high three steals. Allen finished with 11 points on 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Gardner, who made her first start of her career, and Heggins each scored nine, while Ki-Ki Glass handed out six assists.
Appalachian State was led by Aisha Bryant's 12 points off the bench. The sophomore was 3-of-4 from long range and added two steals. Jaymi Wilson and Lindsay Smith each reached double-figures for the Mountaineers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Fuller and Jessica Jank each grabbed seven rebounds to help ASU out-rebound Western 37-36.
A 3-pointer by Appalachian State, who was 2-of-9 beyond the arc, was basically the only difference between the two teams at half time. The Mountaineers led 32-30 at the break as both teams shot 44.8 percent from the field, both teams had 15 rebounds and both teams had six assists.
Western Carolina will return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 22), playing at UNC Greensboro at 7 pm.
