Final Stats
Cullowhee, N.C. ? Furman's Emily Turgeon scored with just over six minutes left in double overtime to give the Paladins a 2-1 victory over the homestanding Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at Schrader Field.
Furman (7-5-1 overall and 5-0 in the SoCon) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore April Raymer found the back of the net from 35 yards out just 3:19 into the contest. Katie Carson was credited with the assist.
Western (6-4-2, 3-1-2 SoCon) tied the match nearly 14 minutes later. Natasha Moore passed the ball to Lauren Bramlett, who left it for senior Kelly Barker. The goal was Barker's second of the season.
Both teams were held in check in the second half. The Paladins only took four shots in the period, compared to seven in the first, and only took two corner kicks, compared to five in the first. The Catamounts were held to just five shots in both halves.
Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime. However, Furman was able to keep the pressure on in the second with three shots, including Turgeon's game winner. (Turgeon's goal was her league-leading 10th of the season.)
Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw registered five saves, while Catamount keeper Mandi Tinsley had seven.
With the loss, Western had its home unbeaten streak snapped at 17 matches, posting a 16-0-1 record over the span. Ironically, the last time the Catamounts lost at home was a 2-1 decision to Furman on Oct. 1, 2000.
Western Carolina will play its next five matches on the road, starting with an Oct. 18 contest at East Tennessee State. The Cats have one remaining home date on the schedule, a Nov. 4 encounter with UNC Asheville. Furman will return to action on Oct. 17 at Wofford.
