CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Western Carolina soccer team grabbed their first double overtime win of the seaosn Wednesday night at Chattanooga, 2-1. With the win, Western improves to 10-5-2 (7-1-2 SoCon) and secures the second place seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Mocs fall to 8-8-1 (3-6-1 SoCon).
The Catamounts' Natalie Turgeon took a well-placed
corner kick from Lauren Bramlett 56 seconds into the
second overtime and booted it past UTC keeper Rawlslyn
Ray for a sudden victory win.
Western Carolina scored at the 15:33 mark on an
unassisted goal by Brittany Bennefield to take a lead into halftime. However, UTC outshot the
Catamounts 10-2 in the first half of play.
In the second half Chattanooga's Dana Van Winkle took
a pass from Diana Jallo at the 82:48 mark to tie the
game at 1-1 and send it into overtime.
Chattanooga controlled the ball throughout most of the
first overtime, but each team could only get one shot
off. However, in the second overtime, WCU's
Bramlett dropped the ball in front of the net to a
waiting Turgeon for the only shot of the second
overtime.WCU senior keeper Mandi Tinsley recorded 12 saves and Ray had
two for UTC.
Western Carolina will
host UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, for senior day.The Lady Mocs will play Tennessee-Martin Friday, Nov.
1, at 4 p.m.
