WCU Women's Hoops Defeats Radford, 78-68

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team gained their fifth win of the season with a 78-68 victory over Radford Saturday afternoon in the Ramsey Center. The Catamounts now stand at 5-1 on the season, while the Highlanders drop to 2-3.

Sophomore Jennifer Gardner opened up scoring in the game by sinking a jumper, off an assist by junior Yoneko Allen, nine seconds into the game. Radford's Brandy Allen scored a jumper to put the Highlanders up, 4-3, and RU held the lead for over six minutes before WCU's Allen hit one of her four 3-pointers for the night to put the Cats back in the lead at 19-18 with 11:59 left in the half. Western led by as many as 10 points and took a 41-34 lead into halftime.

The lead flip-flopped in the second half before Miranda Long hit a jumper to put the Catamounts in the lead for good at 65-63 with 4:53 remaining in the game. Western went on a 20-7 run to end the game with a win and a final score of 78-68.

Yoneko Allen led all scorers with 17 points in the game, adding two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Gardner had an impressive 16 points, including going 10-of-11 from the line. She added a game-high nine rebounds along with Miranda Long, who also had nine.

Jesse Brunjak led the Highlanders with 15 points, adding two rebounds. Amanda Neby had 14 points and three rebounds for Radford, while Holly Sharkey and Allen posted four rebounds each to lead the team.

WCU departs for Savannah, Ga., next as they face Savannah State Monday, Dec. 9, at 6:00 pm. Radford hosts Marshall in its next game on Saturday, Dec. 14.
