Senior Jenny Nett had a game-high 26 points as Wofford defeated the Lady Catamounts of Western Carolina, 77-62, in Southern Conference play Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
With the win, Wofford improved to 13-8 overall and 7-5 in the SoCon, while the Catamounts fell to 13-8, 5-7 SoCon
The first half was a hard-fought affair in which the lead changed hands 11 times. Western Carolina earned a four-point lead, 12-8 at the 12:23 mark. However, the Lady Terriers went on an 11-0 run over the next 3:17 to lead by seven. The teams exchanged leads repeatedly over the last five minutes, and Wofford went into halftime with a 35-34 edge. Nett racked up 16 points in the first half for the Lady Terriers, and Jennifer Gardner had 10 for Western Carolina.
After the break, Gardner made two free throws and Laura Echols converted a layup to give Westernt a three-point edge with 18:34 remaining. Nett quickly responded with a trey to tie the game, and a Cathey Franks layup with 17:57 remaining gave Wofford a lead it would not relinquish. The Catamounts kept it close for most of the period, and trailed by just two, 53-51, with 6:39 remaining. From there, the Lady Terriers went on a 16-5 run to stretch their advantage to 13. They went up as much as 17 with 15 seconds remaining before two Catamount free throws by Yoneko Allen closed the scoring.
Wofford shot 42.6 percent on the game, including an even 50 percent in the second half. Western Carolina shot just 38.9 percent from the field. The Lady Terriers held the edge in turnovers, giving the ball up 16 times to the Cats' 25. Western Carolina grabbed more rebounds, though, getting 43 boards to Wofford's 31.
Nett's 26 led all scorers and she added four assists and two steals in the win. Freshman Ricaye Harris added 16 points and three assists, while Nancy Dubuisson had a season-high 15 points and three steals. Pheobe Clark came up with a team-high eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Catamounts were led by Echols, who had 20 points and eight boards on the afternoon. Gardner finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. It marked the third double-digit rebound effort in the last four games for the Norcross, Ga., native. Janetta Heggins contributed a game-high six assists for Western Carolina.
Western Carolina next plays at noon on Monday (Feb. 4), when it hosts Southern Conference rival Chattanooga.
