Left fielder Doug Myers hit the game-winning home run in the top of the eighth inning to lead Western Carolina past Virginia, 4-3, in game number five of the Berkeley Electric Cooperative Shootout in Riley Park.
Western Carolina (4-1) jumped out early and scored a run in the top of the first inning as shortstop Ryan Schade singled and scored on a single by center fielder Donovan Minero.
Virginia (4-1) retaliated in the bottom of the frame as left fielder David Stone scored on an error by Western Carolina. Right fielder Matt Street then scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Robert Word. The Cavaliers tacked on another in the bottom of the second when first baseman Joe Koshansky doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Kyle Werman.
The Catamounts narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the top of the sixth as first baseman Alan Beck scored on a ground out by left fielder Doug Myers. The Catamounts knotted the score at 3-3 in the seventh when right fielder Rod Goldston doubled home designated hitter Chris Davis, who singled to lead off the inning.
Western then took the lead in the top of the eighth as Myers hit a solo home run to give the Catamounts a 4-3 advantage. The blast was his second of the season.
Western starter Seth Foster pitched 7.2 innings and struck out seven to improve to 2-0 on the season. Foster only allowed three hits and one earned run, while striking out seven and walking two. Catamount closer Joe Camac picked up his first save of the season, pitching the final 1.1 innings. Virginia reliever Shooter Starr took the loss after surrendering the home run to Myers.
Davis collected two hits in his first start. Western shuffled its lineup as regular first baseman Todd Buchanan was sick. Minero and Schade added two hits as well.
Western Carolina returns to action Sunday morning as they will take on West Virginia at 10 am. On Tuesday, the Catamounts will play the first of two games versus 10th-ranked Florida State in Tallahassee.
