Cullowhee, N.C. - After winning four of its six singles matches, Western Carolina's women's tennis team picked up their first conference win in Coach Jan Stubb's three-year career by beating East Tennessee State, 4-3, at the WCU Reid Gym Courts Saturday afternoon. The Lady Catamounts improve to 6-9 (1-5 SoCon) for the season, while the Bucs fall to 1-16 (0-5 SoCon).
In doubles action, WCU won in the three spot by default since there was not a third Buccaneer team. Shelby Fitzpatrick and Shannon Zalinski fell to Jessica Irey and Gemma Halim, 8-4. Emmy King and Kristin Cotton lost to Tatiana Arriaran and Aimee Villavicencio, 8-6.
In singles play, the Lady Cats won four of six to give them the 4-3 victory. Kristin Munn, Erin Johnson, Kristin Cotton, and Emmy King all won their matches.
The Catamounts travel to Boone Sunday to take on Appalachian State at 2:00 pm. Western has one final home match of the season when they host UNC Asheville on April 16. This game was rescheduled from last week.
