Final Stats

Cullowhee, N.C. - Senior pitcher T.A. Fulmer threw his second straight complete-game shutout - and his third of the season - as The Citadel handed homestanding Western Carolina a 7-0 loss Saturday afternoon at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

Fulmer, the reigning National Pitcher of the Week after throwing a no-hitter in his last outing, used just 94 pitches as he struck out nine Catamounts and walked none, while scattering seven hits. Western's Rod Goldston reached third base in the third inning and Donovan Minero reached third in the seventh, but they were the only Catamounts to advance past first as Fulmer (4-0) extended his streak to 18 innings of scoreless baseball. Today's game was the fourth shutout by The Citadel this season.

Two Bulldogs had nearly as impressive day at the plate as Fulmer did on the mound. Sophomore Chip Cannon had a career-high four hits (in five at bats) and tied a career high with three RBI. Senior David Griffin also had a career game, collecting three doubles (3-for-5) to fall one double shy of the school single-game record.

The Citadel (19-11, 12-2 SoCon) scored runs in each of the first three innings to race out to a 4-0 lead. In the first, Griffin hit the first of his doubles and later scored on a double by Cannon. In the second, Josh Stackley, who tied a career high with three hits on the day, reached on a one-out, infield single and scored after consecutive singles by Will Coker and Chris Ard. In the third, after Jason Randall reached on a WCU error, Cannon followed with a two-run homer to straight away center. The blast was his fourth of the season.

The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead, chasing Catamount starter Dan Foley in the frame. Cannon started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a WCU error, allowing Jon Aughey to reach first. Stackley then delivered a one-out double down the left field line, plating Cannon and Aughey.

The Citadel capped the scoring in the sixth as Griffin scored on a two-out single by Aughey.

Western Carolina (19-10, 9-5 SoCon) got two hits each from Goldston, Minero and Chris Davis. Junior Alan Beck added the Cats' other hit in the contest.

Foley falls to 2-2 on the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) and a career-high 11 hits in 4.1 innings. The senior did strikeout four Bulldogs and walked none. Freshman Brad Josey pitched the final 4.2 innings for the Catamounts, allowing four hits, one run and one walk with four strikeouts.

Western Carolina and The Citadel will play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday (Apr. 7) at 1 pm.
