Final Stats

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team came from behind to challenge Davidson late in the second half, but could not hold on for the win as the Wildcats defeated WCU, 64-61, to start the second round of Southern Conference play. With the loss, the Catamounts drop to 14-5 and 7-3 in the SoCon, while Davidson picks up its 200th win in the program's history and improved to 9-10 and 4-6 in the league.

The Wildcats found themselves down early as WCU freshman Kala Greene sank a trey to put Western up 10-4 at 15:04. The Catamounts led by as many as seven points on another WCU 3-pointer, this time from Yoneko Allen, to make the score 18-11, but Davidson battled back with seven straight points to tie it up at 18 apiece after a 3-pointer by Robyn Flewelling. A jumper by Emily Callahan gave DC the lead for good in the first half and the Wildcats took a 31-28 advantage into the locker room.

Davidson extended its lead to eight on a layup by Callahan early in the second stanza, but this time it was the Catamounts who put together a comeback of their own, taking the 42-41 lead after two made free throws by Janetta Heggins at 13:35. The score was knotted four more times before Davidson took the lead back for good with 19 seconds remaining in the game on a jumper by Flewelling, two of her career-tying 15 points. Tiffany Hamm turned the ball over on the other end of the court and Jennifer Gardner immediately fouled Ashley Hallsted with 1.2 seconds left to send her to the line. Hallsted made the first, but missed on the second shot and Gardner grabbed the rebound as time expired in the game.

Melissa Ervin led the Catamounts with 15 points, all coming in the second half and 12 of them coming on 3-pointers, adding five rebounds. Allen posted 12 points in the game, coming solely from 3-point range, and two assists. Jennifer Gardner came just one rebound short of the double-double with 11 points and nine boards, while Janetta Heggins led the team with five assists, adding nine points and four rebounds.

Callahan and Flewelling led the Wildcats with 15 points each, while Flewelling completed the double-double, adding 10 boards, as well as posting five assists, two blocks and two steals. Courtney Laird also had two blocks for Davidson, adding 12 points and five rebounds.

While Western Carolina outshot Davidson, 37.5-35.9 percent, the Wildcats outrebounded WCU, 44-38, and posted five blocks against the Catamounts. Western scored a season-high 11-of-25 3-point field goals in the loss, while tying a season-low five steals.

The WCU women will host Wofford on Monday, Feb. 3, at 7:00 pm in the RAC before heading to Chattanooga on the 6th for a match-up with SoCon leader UTC.
