Cullowhee N.C. - Western Carolina (4-5-1, 1-2) shutout Coastal Carolina (7-6-0, 1-1) 1-0 Saturday afternoon in women's soccer action at Schrader Field. Freshman Stephanie Svoboda scored her third game-winning goal of the season, to top the Catamounts, and give the team the win.
In the first half the Catamounts came out on fire, winning the ball on nearly every opportunity. The offense got off 11 shots, and the defense held Coastal to just six shots. However, neither team was able to put a point on the board, and went into halftime tied at 0-0.
The Cats got on the board in the 67th minute, as a corner kick from senior Lauren Bramlett found sophomore Megan Chambers. Chambers then headed the ball to a charging Svoboda who found the back of the net. The goal turned out to be all the Catamounts needed to get the win.
The Catamount defense faced 19 shots in the game and picked up four team saves. WCU goal keeper Tina Weaver additionally grabbed eight saves on the day.
"We played real scrappy today and we shot the ball with a lot of heart." head coach Debbie Hensley said. "These girls laid everything out on the field today. We had a great week of practice, which carried over into the game. I'm very proud of their effort and everything about this game."
The Cats return to action Monday, October 6 on the road against UNC Asheville, with match time scheduled to start 4:00 pm.
