Oct. 6, 2003

Final Stats

Asheville, N.C. - Marie Nicolini scored late in regulation to give Western Carolina (4-5-2) a 2-2 tie with UNC Asheville (5-4-1) in women's soccer action Monday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

UNCA scored the first goal of the game at the 10:50 mark on a penalty kick as Kelsey Dawson scored her ninth goal of the season. The Bulldogs continued to go after WCU goalkeeper Tina Weaver but could not extend their 1-0 lead. The Lady Cats tied the match when Tammy Jones chipped in a shot from 40 yards out, her first collegiate goal, to make it 1-1.

In the second half, UNCA took the 2-1 lead when Hilary McKay received a pass from Brita Nordgren and scored her eighth goal of the year at the 58:45 mark.

The Bulldogs tried to put the game away as Dawson was alone on a breakaway with 20 minutes remaining but just missed scoring as her shot was inches wide. Western Carolina then knotted the game for good when Nicolini hit a shot from 40 yards out from Keevy Harris that bounced into the goal to make it 2-2 at the 84:27 mark, netting her first goal of the season.

The teams traded chances in the overtime period but could not get the game-winner. Weaver was brilliant in goal for the Lady Cats with nine saves, now with 72 on the season.

Western Carolina will host Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State Thursday afternoon at home with match-time set for 4 pm at Schrader Field.
