Buies Creek, N.C. - Tiffany Hamm tied a career-high 28 points as Western Carolina bowled over Campbell, 56-43, to win its fourth consecutive season-opener Friday night. The Catamounts trailed just once in the game and not by more than two points as the Cats head to High Point Tuesday, Nov. 25, with a 1-0 record.
Western took advantage of 30 Campbell turnovers, scoring 29 points en route to the win. Along with Hamm's 28 points and eight rebounds, the Catamounts were led by junior Sigita Maleraite who scored 10 points and grabbed nine boards.
WCU senior Christy Blackwell tallied four assists and four steals in the game to move her into fourth and fifth place, respectively, on the school's all-time list for the categories. She now has 282 career assists and 210 career steals.
Freshman Jennifer Martin led Campbell (0-1) with nine points and 12 rebounds in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Tomika Tomlinson picked up six points and sophomore Dasha Green grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Camels.
WCU also took advantage of fouls, converting 21-of-31 from the charity stripe to 12-of-20 for Campbell. The Cats shot 37.2 percent for the game while holding the Camels to just 30.6 percent shooting.
The Catamounts went into the halftime break with a 29-22 lead as Hamm scored 14 of her 28 points in the first period. Freshman Latoya Armstrong led Campbell with five points in the first period.
Turnovers were the key to the first half for both teams. Campbell committed 16 turnovers which WCU converted into 17 points.
The Lady Cats hit the road again, taking on High Point Tuesday, Nov. 25. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
