Final Stats
Cullowhee, N.C. -
With Kevin Martin - the nation's leading scorer (28.0 ppg) - sitting out with the flu, Catamount sophomores David Berghoefer and Jared Outing each recorded double-doubles, while four others scored in double figures, as Western Carolina (4-3) cruised to a 120-46 victory over Averett University (0-7) Wednesday night at the Ramsey Activity Center.
Berghoefer, a 6-10 center from Cross Plains, Wis., fell one point and one rebound shy of career highs in both points and rebounds with 18 and 15, respectively, in just 19 minutes of play. Outing, a 6-7 forward from Columbia, S.C., established career highs in points (21) and steals (5), while tying a career-high with 12 rebounds. Terrence Woodyard (Jonesboro, Ga./Mt. Zion) just missed a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds. Alex Osipovitch (Minsk, Belarus), Corey Muirhead (Toronto, Ontario), Kyle Greathouse (Lancaster, Ohio) and Emre Atsur (Istanbul, Turkey) also scored in double figures as WCU was just one player shy of having seven players scored 10 points or more for the first time in school history.
Muirhead and Greathouse teamed up for an ally-oop dunk for the first points of the game and Western never looked back. However, sloppy play early by Western kept the game close through the first 10 minutes. With 9:10 left in the first period, Greathouse drained a 3-pointer for an 11-point Catamount edge. Averett's Matthew Jordan answered with a trey of his own, making the score 23-15, but that eight-point deficit was as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the night. From the 6:50 mark until 2:26 in the first period, the Cats went on a 17-0 run to put the game out of reach and would eventually take a 54-23 lead at the break.
The Cats then opened the second half with a 19-6 run, making the score 71-27 with 14:51 left in the game. Western shot 61 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, while holding the Cougars to just 18.9 percent shooting. The Catamounts also dominated the boards in the second half, pulling down 38 rebounds to just 12 by Averett.
For the game, Western had a total of 68 rebounds, which is a Ramsey Center record. For the second consecutive game, the Cats had more assists (27) than turnovers (19), while coming away with 16 steals. Averett, who shot just 22.9 percent for the game, only had five assists with 24 turnovers.
Osipovitch, who only played 11 minutes, scored 17 points on the night, going 7-for-7 from the field, with five rebounds. Muirhead sparked the Cats' early second-half spurt and finished with 18 points and setting a career high with four steals. Greathouse turned in a season-high 13 points with five assists and just one turnover. Atsur, who was 5-of-7 at the free throw line, also scored 13 points, while tying a career high with four assists.
In addition to the six Catamounts that scored double figures, James Johnson had career highs with seven rebounds and eight assists, with just one turnover.
Averett was led by Jerrod Harris with 10 points. It marked the 20th time in his last 26 games he has reached double figures in points. Jermaine Coston added nine points.
Western Carolina will return to action next Monday (Dec. 22) at Arkansas. Tip off is set for 8 pm (ET).
