Cullowhee, N.C. ? ??Western Carolina had a five-run fifth in game one and a four-run sixth in game two en route to wins of 9-6 and 9-8, respectively, versus Liberty in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.
In game one, Liberty jumped out to a 1-0 lead as leadoff hitter Larry Wayne York had an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Phillip Laurent double. Western answered with a single run in the bottom of the first, even though it pounded out four hits in the inning. Rod Goldston, who singled and advanced to second on a fielding error, moved to third on a balk and scored on an RBI single by Todd Buchanan.
The teams each left a runner on base over in each of the next three innings, but did not score again until the fourth. Liberty?s Jeremiah Boles reached on a fielder?s choice and stole second, advancing to third on a error. Joshua Butcher plated Boles with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the bottom half, Western sent eight men to the plate in scoring two runs and chasing Flame starting pitcher Todd Mittauer. Liberty tied the game with a single run in the top of the fifth, thanks to a Laurent sac fly. The Cats put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth with their five-run explosion, highlighted by a two-run single by Todd Roper.
Liberty threatened in the ninth. A.J. Van Slyke delivered a two-out, two-run double, making the score 9-6, but was thrown out at third to end the game.
Roper led the way in game one for the Cats with his 3-for-5 performance and two RBI. Buchanan added three hits, while Goldston contributed two RBI. Sophomore Brandon McDowell (2-0) pitched five solid innings for the win, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks with three stikeouts. Wayne paced the Flame offense with three hits in four at bats. Relief pitcher Billy Daniels (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits in 1.1 innings.
In game two, Western got off to the early start, thanks to a solo home run by Alan Beck in the bottom of the first. Liberty then scored two in the second, two in the third, a single run in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. WCU starter Ryan Basner only lasted 4.0 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs, although only two were earned. Relief pitcher Alex Obert then gave up a leadoff homer by Flame third baseman Chad Bryan in the top of the fifth. WCU sophomore Brian Barnes (1-2) silenced the Liberty bats over the final 4.1 innings, allowing an unearned run and two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. While Barnes picked up his first win, he still has not given up an earned run this season (five appearances, 8.2 innings).
Western kept it close, scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings, while plating two in the fifth. However, WCU sent nine men to the plate in the fifth to take a 9-7 lead. Freshman Matt Nelson had the key hit. With the bases loaded, Nelson had a three-run double to go one run up, 8-7. Western added what proved to be the winning run in the inning as Buchanan drew walk with the bases loaded to force in Roper.
Beck went 3-for-3 in game two, while Nelson accounted for six of WCU?s nine runs by going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Liberty was led by Laurent?s 3-for-4 performance, while Butcher and Bryan added two hits each and Daniel Bote had two RBI. Nat Ogborne (0-1) took the loss in game two, allowing five hits and four runs in 1.1 innings of relief work.
