Statesboro, Ga. - Western Carolina's women's basketball team kept the game close, but could not hold off the Eagles as Georgia Southern defeated WCU, 71-59, Monday night. With the loss, Western moves into a tie for second in the Southern Conference with GSU at 9-4. The Catamounts are 16-6 overall, while the Eagles improve to 15-7.
The Lady Eagles held Western Carolina scoreless for the first 4:30 of the game until freshman Kala Greene scored the jumper to put the Cats on the board. Greene recorded the first five points for WCU to spark a run that tied the game at 12-12 on a 3-pointer by Melissa Ervin. Shawnica Hill kept the lead alive for the Eagles with a jumper at 10:08, but two free throws by WCU's Jennifer Gardner knotted the game again and a shot from the line by Janetta Heggins gave the Cats the 15-14 lead. The lead switched hands a few more times before a lay-up by Tiffany Lanier gave Georgia Southern the 34-33 lead going into halftime.
The game was tied once in the second half at 41-all after a 3-pointer by Yoneko Allen, but the Eagles never let Western get ahead. GSU's largest lead of the game was in the last minute as Rachel Loiacono sank a free throw to give Southern the 71-59 win.
Ki-Ki Glass entered the WCU record book after dishing out two assists in the first half. The sophomore placed herself in 10th on the school's career assists list, now with 180. Allen led the Cats with 15 points. Gardner added 11 points and 11 rebounds , while Greene posted 10 points on the night.
Jessica Everett led all scorers with 18 points. Lanier dished out 11 assits in the win and the Eagles outrebounded the Cats, 37-35.
WCU is set to host ETSU Saturday, Feb. 15, in the RAC at 2:00 pm.
