Women's Tennis Catamount Athletics

Western Women Fall to Chattanooga, 6-1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lady Mocs won five singles matches and took two in doubles play to defeat Western Carolina 6-1 in a Southern Conference tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Complex.

Just two days removed from frigid temperatures and snow flurries, the Mocs and Catamounts took the court under crystal clear skies and temperatures reaching into the 70's. Chattanooga's Charlotte Goude and Saskia van Velze started the day defeating Rocio Perez and Erin Johnson 8-2 to remain undefeated in the conference. The duo is 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the league. Catherine Allen and Cynthia Oulevay beat Shannon Zalinsky and Megan Bechtold 8-5 to clinch the point. Western Carolina's Kristin Cotton and Katie VanEwyk won the No. 3 match 8-4 over Bethany Everett and Lauren Snipes.

In singles play, van Velze posted a team-high sixth conference win defeating Johnson 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Goude downed Perez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, Oulevay beat Bechtold 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, and Allen won, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 over Kristin Munn. Snipes beat Zalinsky in a tiebreak 6-3, 5-7, (10-6) for UTC's sixth point, and the Catamount's Cotton forced a tiebreak, beating Everett 6-3, 2-6 (10-2).

Chattanooga improves to 10-9 overall and 5-2 against league opponents. The Catamounts fall to 5-9 on the season and are still looking for its first conference win at 0-5. The Catamounts return to action Wednesday, April 2, at 3:00 pm against Furman in Greenville, S.C.
