Final Stats

Greensboro, N.C. - A three-run home run by Jay Maule spurred a five-run eighth as UNC Greensboro completed a Saturday doubleheader with a 6-1 victory over Western Carolina. The Spartans improve to 24-9, 9-5 in the SoCon, while the 29th-ranked Catamounts fall to 23-12, 13-4.

Western was able to remain atop the SoCon standings as The Citadel dropped a pair of game to Davidson this weekend.

UNCG took control in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five runs thanks to the three-run home run by Maule. With one out, Sarvis, Saltalamacchia and Ryan Gordon strung together consecutive singles, the last being an RBI. Maule then followed with a three-run shot over the right field fence. After a strikeout and a walk, Clay Wehner singled to center to cap the scoring.

UNC Greensboro jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth. Jason Sarvis singled on wind aided fly ball. A single by Justin Saltalamacchia put runners on the corners. WCU starting pitcher Ryan Basner uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Sarvis to score.

The Catamounts got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth. Todd Buchanan started things with a leadoff single, then advanced to third on Rod Goldston's double. Goldston, who had doubled earlier, now has 60 for his career to tie for seventh on the Southern Conference all-time list and is only eight doubles away from the WCU career record. Edick followed Goldston's double with an RBI ground out to knot the game at 1-1.

Spartan relief pitcher Chris Mason (3-0) was credited with the win, pitching the final two innings and facing the minimum number of batters. Basner (3-2) took the loss, pitching his first career complete game. He allowed nine hits and six runs, while walking two and fanning six.

Goldston paced the WCU offense with his two doubles in four plate appearances. The Spartans' number two, three and four hitters led the way. Sarvis was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Saltalamacchia was 3-for-4 and Gordon was 2-for-4. Maule drove in three with his only hit being the three-run homer.

The team's will complete the weekend series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
